Purpose: To Advise the County on Matters pertaining to the operation, management and maintenance of veterans’ cemeteries and discuss and make recommendations on issues affecting veterans residing in Hawai‘i County.
Authority: Section 15-61, Hawaii County Code, as amended, in conjunction with Hawaii Revised Statutes, Section 363-5
Appointment: Mayor with Council approval. Normal five-year staggered terms.
Full Membership: Twelve members.
Ex-Officio Members: Hawaii Island Veterans Affairs Advisor, Director of Parks and Recreation
Specific Representation - Must have one representative from each of the following organizations: American Legion, Big Island National Guard Retirees Association, Big Island Retired Military Association, Veterans of Foreign Wars. The Committee must also include eight at-large members.
Requirements: At least seven members must have served in the United States uniformed services.
Meetings: Meetings are usually held via Zoom Videoconferencing Software and videoconference held at the West Hawaii Civic Center.
Financial Disclosure: Not required.
Reappointment: Members shall be eligible to succeed themselves for additional terms, provided that no member shall serve on the committee for more than three consecutive terms.
Qualities: Respected by the community and by veterans as being community-minded and oriented. Able to focus on community and veteran needs as a whole without catering to special or self-interest.
